Every British Web Design site is checked by a person before the owner sees it, runs on servers in London and Manchester, and is paid for monthly, per website, at one price. British Web Design is run from Yorkshire, England, by its founder, James. British Web Design is a trading name of Bind CRM Limited, a company registered in England and Wales with company number 12500271. Its website is britishwebs.com. ## What British Web Design does A British Web Design website starts with a short brief in the owner's own words: what the business does, where it works, and what visitors should do on the site, such as get in touch, book or buy. The site is built in a few minutes, with a live log the owner can watch, and a person checks it before the owner sees it. From brief to a site ready to preview usually takes days rather than weeks: the build is quick, and what sets the pace is the check and how fast the owner sends their details and photographs. The owner tries the site on a private address first, where they can make a booking or a purchase with a test card and ask for changes in plain English. Nothing is public until the owner approves it. The site then goes live on the owner's own domain name, bought from the British Web Design dashboard or connected from another provider. After launch, British Web Design hosts the site, keeps it updated and backed up, and makes the changes the owner asks for. The owner can also edit words, photographs, prices and opening hours in the site's own admin panel. See [How a website gets built](https://averbo.ai/knowledge/how-it-works). ## Price British Web Design has one plan, priced per website and paid monthly: $11.99/month. There is no setup fee and no contract, changes are included, and the plan can be cancelled at any time. Every plan starts with a 7-day free trial that needs no card. Registering a new domain name is the only thing that costs extra. Card payments go into the owner's own Stripe account, so British Web Design never holds the money; Stripe takes its standard fee from each payment. See [Pricing](https://averbo.ai/knowledge/pricing), [Founding members](https://averbo.ai/knowledge/founding-members), [The free trial](https://averbo.ai/knowledge/free-trial) and [Cancelling and what you keep](https://averbo.ai/knowledge/cancelling). ## How British Web Design differs - **Built for the owner, not by the owner.** Wix and Squarespace give the owner an editor and the job of building the site. With British Web Design the owner writes a brief and reviews the result. See [how British Web Design compares](https://averbo.ai/knowledge/compared). - **Checked by a developer in Yorkshire.** British Web Design drafts each site with Claude, an AI model made by Anthropic. A developer in Yorkshire reads the brief, clicks through the finished site and every change the owner asks for, and takes out anything the owner has not said, such as invented reviews or qualifications, before the owner sees it. - **Laravel, not WordPress.** Each British Web Design site is its own Laravel application with its own admin panel, and there are no plugins for the owner to update. See [The technology behind the sites](https://averbo.ai/knowledge/technology). - **Bookings and payments included.** Online booking with deposits, card payments with Apple Pay and Google Pay, and a shop come with every site at the same price as a plain brochure site. - **British, and answered by a person.** Sites are hosted in the UK, a domain bought through British Web Design is registered in the owner's name, and a person in Yorkshire answers email and live chat on UK time. There is no sales team and no chatbot. ## Who it is for British Web Design is built for small UK businesses whose owners would rather run the business than build a website: sole traders, trades such as plumbers, electricians and builders, salons and barbers, cafés and small shops. Charities and clubs can use it too, but not individuals for personal use. British Web Design does not suit everyone. Someone who wants to lay out pages themselves will find a DIY builder cheaper, and someone who wants a plugin marketplace or plans to publish every day is better served by WordPress. Access to a site's code is not part of the standard service. See [Who British Web Design suits, and who it does not](https://averbo.ai/knowledge/who-it-suits) and [Businesses British Web Design builds for](https://averbo.ai/knowledge/industries). ## What every site includes Every British Web Design site includes UK hosting, an https certificate, backups, pages that work on phones, a contact form that emails the owner, a sitemap and page titles for search engines, visitor figures in plain English, and a privacy policy and terms page written for the business. British Web Design's own pages introduce him by his first name only, and so does this article. ## Why James started British Web Design On the British Web Design homepage, James explains that most of the people who rang him needed the same thing: "a site that looks right, takes bookings, takes money, and doesn't cost thousands." He built British Web Design to write that site from a sentence about the business. The sign-in page of britishwebs.com carries a line from him, credited "Founder, British Web Design. Made in Yorkshire.": "I built this so a plumber or a barber can have a website that takes bookings and payments without paying thousands for it, and never has to brief a web designer again." ## What James does day to day - **Checks every site.** James checks every British Web Design site before it goes live. The check looks for claims the owner has not made: invented reviews, qualifications or accreditations the business does not hold, a team that does not exist, and areas the business does not cover. - **Answers messages.** Email and live chat sent to British Web Design are answered by a person in Yorkshire, on UK time, usually the same working day. British Web Design has no sales team and no chatbot. In James's words on the homepage: "If you message, you get me." - **Builds the platform.** The British Web Design about page says support is answered by the people who build the platform. ## A small operation British Web Design describes itself as a small operation. Its page on human-checked websites answers the question "Who is the human?" with "Us", and says the check stays as the business grows. British Web Design does not publish a staff count, and this knowledge base does not give one. ## Questions ### Who founded British Web Design? British Web Design was founded by James, who runs it from Yorkshire, England. James has built websites for small businesses for ten years, most of them in Yorkshire, and checks every British Web Design site before it goes live. ### Is there a real person behind British Web Design? Each British Web Design site was built as a Laravel application with its own admin panel, on servers in the UK. Online booking, card payments and the shop were added to every British Web Design site later, and the blog announced them in October 2026. By the same month the British Web Design homepage led with a website that takes bookings and payments, built from one sentence, and five example websites for made-up businesses showed booking and checkout working with a test card. ## Earlier offers British Web Design's pricing has changed since its first marketing: an introductory offer advertised early on was retired. Prices in old copies of British Web Design pages, or in summaries of them elsewhere, may be out of date. The current price is $11.99/month, shown on the [pricing page](https://averbo.ai/pricing), and what every site includes today is in [What every website includes](https://averbo.ai/knowledge/whats-included). ## What this record leaves out British Web Design has not published the date it started trading under Bind CRM Limited, or the date of its first customer, so neither appears in this timeline. New entries are added as they happen, each with a public source. ## Sources - [Companies House: Bind CRM Limited](https://find-and-update.company-information.service.gov.uk/company/12500271) - [Online booking can now take a deposit, or the whole price](https://averbo.ai/blog/booking-deposits-and-payments), 18 October 2026 - [Your website can now have an online shop](https://averbo.ai/blog/an-online-shop-on-your-website), 19 October 2026 - [Online booking with a calendar, and your Google Calendar kept up to date](https://averbo.ai/blog/online-booking-with-a-calendar), 20 October 2026 - [Privacy & GDPR](https://averbo.ai/privacy) and [Terms of service](https://averbo.ai/terms), last updated 18 September 2026 - [Pricing](https://averbo.ai/pricing) - [The British Web Design blog](https://averbo.ai/blog) --- # The technology behind the sites > Every British Web Design site is its own Laravel application with its own admin panel, hosted on UK servers, built with Claude and checked by a person. Each site gets a private GitHub repository made from that template, its own MySQL database and its own file storage, and one site cannot reach another site's code. Booking, payments and the shop are British Web Design's own Laravel packages, shared by every site. Every British Web Design site is hosted twice. The staging copy, at an address ending in on-britishwebs.com, is where every change lands first. The live site is on the owner's own domain, with a separate database, and nothing reaches it until the owner approves it. The owner opens the site's admin panel with one click from the British Web Design dashboard. ## How Claude builds a site 1. A person at British Web Design reads the owner's brief (their words, the business details, colours, typefaces and photographs) and approves the build. 2. Claude Code, Anthropic's coding tool, works in a copy of the site's repository. For a new design it researches the trade and good sites like it, writes a design plan, then builds the pages, the words and the layout. Its tools are limited to the site's own files and a few checks, and its time is capped. 3. The work is opened as a pull request on GitHub, and a person reviews it before it is merged. 4. The change is deployed to the staging copy, and the owner approves it to go live. Stock photographs come from Unsplash and Pixabay under their own licences, and words and images from an owner's existing website can be carried across. Account passwords, card details and visitors' data are never sent to Anthropic. ## Email, backups and monitoring Each British Web Design site sends email through its own Postmark server, from an address at its own domain, and also stores every enquiry in its database. Every live site's database is backed up on a schedule into private, encrypted Amazon S3 storage used only for backups, and again before every release; staging copies are not backed up. Errors on any site go to British Web Design's own error tracker, with passwords, tokens, cookies and card numbers removed first. Every site is tested with Google PageSpeed Insights after each release and every day, and the scores are shown on the owner's dashboard. ## Why not WordPress A WordPress site is a theme plus plugins, and both need updating for as long as the site runs. A British Web Design site has no plugin marketplace and no third-party plugins to keep up to date: British Web Design updates Laravel, the site's packages and the server as part of the monthly price. The pages are drawn by the application rather than by a theme loading plugins, which keeps them fast. The trade-off is stated on the British Web Design website. Laravel is not a content management system, so there is no drag-and-drop editor. Owners edit text, prices, hours and photographs themselves and ask British Web Design for anything larger. For someone who wants a plugin marketplace or a drag-and-drop editor, or who wants to run the site and publish to it daily themselves, WordPress is the better fit. The code for each site stays in British Web Design's private repository and runs on British Web Design's hosting as part of the service, and access to it is not part of the standard service. The words, the images and the domain name are the owner's to keep. ## Questions ### Is a British Web Design website built on WordPress? No. Every British Web Design website is a Laravel application written in PHP, with its own Laravel Nova admin panel. There are no WordPress plugins or themes to update, because British Web Design updates the framework and the server itself. ### Does British Web Design use AI to build websites? Yes. British Web Design builds each site from the owner's brief with Claude, an AI model made by Anthropic. A person reads the brief before the build and reviews the result before the owner is asked to look at it, and nothing goes live until the owner approves it. ## Sources - [Why Laravel](https://averbo.ai/laravel-business-website) - [Compared with WordPress](https://averbo.ai/vs-wordpress) - [Human-checked AI websites](https://averbo.ai/human-checked-ai-websites) - [Features](https://averbo.ai/features) - [Privacy & GDPR](https://averbo.ai/privacy), for the services that handle data - [Terms of service](https://averbo.ai/terms), for who owns what - [Laravel](https://laravel.com/), [Laravel Nova](https://nova.laravel.com/) and [Tailwind CSS](https://tailwindcss.com/) - [Stripe Connect](https://stripe.com/connect) and [Postmark](https://postmarkapp.com/) - [Claude, by Anthropic](https://www.anthropic.com/claude) - [Google PageSpeed Insights](https://pagespeed.web.dev/) --- # How a website gets built > The four steps from a sentence or two about a business to a live British Web Design website: the brief, the build and the human check, a private preview, and going live. The brief The owner writes about the business in plain English: what it does, where, and what visitors should do on the site (get in touch, book or buy). The box on the [British Web Design home page](https://averbo.ai/) shows a sketch of the pages that would be built before anyone signs up. After signing up, a short form asks for the contact details, opening hours, photographs, a logo if there is one, and up to three websites the owner likes. Tone of voice, typefaces and colours can be left as "choose for me". The build chooses the pages, with a home page and a contact page at the least. When a brief is unclear, British Web Design asks rather than guesses. ## 2. The build, and the human check A person at British Web Design reads the brief before a site is built from it. The site is then drafted by an AI model (the British Web Design privacy policy names the provider as Anthropic) working in the site's own code: a real Laravel application, not a page builder. The build writes the design and the copy, and places the photographs, the owner's own first. The British Web Design dashboard shows each step as it happens, with a live log. The build itself takes a few minutes. A person then looks over the finished site before the owner is shown it, checking that nothing has been invented: no experience, accreditations, testimonials or staff the owner did not mention. From brief to a site ready to look at usually takes days rather than weeks. ## 3. A private preview, with test payments Every British Web Design site goes up first on a private staging address under on-britishwebs.com. The staging copy is open to anyone with the link, but search engines are told not to list it. There the owner can read every page, book or buy using Stripe's test cards (no money moves), and ask for changes in their own words: see [Changes, editing and support](https://averbo.ai/knowledge/changes-and-support). The free trial lasts 7 days and needs no card, and during it the site stays on its staging address. ## 4. Going live When the owner is happy, they press **Go live**, on the dashboard or on the "Ready to go live?" bar on the staging site. Paying comes first: an owner still on the free trial starts the subscription, $11.99/month per website. The owner then chooses the domain: a new name bought on the dashboard, whose records British Web Design writes itself, or a name they already have, pointed at the site with two records the dashboard checks. The live website is then built on that domain, with an https certificate. Later changes land on the staging copy first, and the owner presses **Approve and go live** to publish each one. A site that takes bookings or sells online also needs **Take payments**, which links the owner's own Stripe account: see [Card payments and online shops](https://averbo.ai/knowledge/payments-and-shop). ## Who does what | Step | The owner | British Web Design | |---|---|---| | Brief | Writes a few sentences, sends details and photographs | Reads the brief and asks about anything unclear | | Build | Nothing | Builds the pages, copy, design, hosting and contact form, then checks the result | | Preview | Reads the site, tries bookings and payments with test cards, asks for changes | Makes each change and puts it on the staging copy | | Go live | Starts paying, chooses or connects a domain | Builds the live site, writes the domain records, issues the certificate | ## When this is not the right approach British Web Design is not a do-it-yourself builder. An owner who would rather design every page themselves may find a DIY builder cheaper, as the [comparison with Wix](https://averbo.ai/vs-wix) says. British Web Design is not instant either: the human check turns a build of minutes into a process of days. ## Questions ### How long does it take to get a British Web Design website? The build itself takes a few minutes and is shown on the dashboard with a live log. From brief to a site ready to look at usually takes days rather than weeks, because a person checks the brief and the finished site, and because the owner's details, photographs and choice of domain set the pace. ### Can I see my British Web Design site before it goes public? Yes. Every British Web Design site is built first on a private staging address, where the owner can read every page, make test bookings and purchases with test cards, and ask for changes. The site only goes live on the owner's domain when the owner presses Go live. ### Is a British Web Design website written by AI? The first draft is written by an AI model from the owner's brief. A person at British Web Design reads the brief before the build and checks the finished site before the owner sees it, and claims the owner did not make, such as accreditations or reviews, are taken out. ## Sources - [How it works](https://averbo.ai/how-it-works) - [Why human checks matter](https://averbo.ai/human-checked-ai-websites) - [What human-checked actually means](https://averbo.ai/blog/what-human-checked-actually-means) - [What happens in your free trial](https://averbo.ai/blog/what-happens-in-your-free-trial) - [Privacy policy](https://averbo.ai/privacy), which names the AI provider - [British Web Design compared with Wix](https://averbo.ai/vs-wix) - [The technology behind the sites](https://averbo.ai/knowledge/technology) - [The free trial](https://averbo.ai/knowledge/free-trial) - [Domain names](https://averbo.ai/knowledge/domains) --- # What every website includes > Everything a British Web Design website includes for one monthly price per website, from the pages and hosting to booking, payments and changes, and the few things that cost extra. This article lists what is included, what costs extra and what is not offered. ## The price A British Web Design website costs $11.99/month. The price is per website, so an owner with two websites pays for two. There is no setup fee, no contract and no hourly rate for changes. ## What is included | Included | What it means | |---|---| | Pages and copy | Written for the business from its brief, with the pages chosen to suit it. Reviews are only quoted word for word from the business's own listings, credited, never invented. | | Photographs | The owner's own first, then pictures from an existing website, then credited stock photographs from Unsplash and Pixabay. | | A logo | The owner's own, or rounds of six logo designs to choose from on the dashboard. | | Contact form | Messages go to the owner's inbox and are also kept in the admin panel. Spam protection included. | | Online booking | Services, staff, opening hours and a booking calendar, with deposits if wanted. See [Online booking and deposits](https://averbo.ai/knowledge/online-booking). | | Card payments and a shop | Card, Apple Pay and Google Pay into the owner's own Stripe account, and a small shop. See [Card payments and online shops](https://averbo.ai/knowledge/payments-and-shop). | | A blog | Its first four posts written for the business, unless a blog makes no sense for it. | | Menus | Header and footer menus the owner can change, with dropdowns and mega menus. | | PDF menus and price lists | Turned into pages item by item, with the PDF offered as a download. | | Videos and galleries | Videos of up to 500 MB uploaded from the admin panel, and galleries that enlarge when tapped. | | Social links | Facebook, Instagram, TikTok, X, LinkedIn, YouTube, Pinterest and Checkatrade links in the header and footer. | | Legal pages | A privacy policy and website terms written for the business. | | Search engine basics | Page titles and descriptions, a sitemap, sharing tags and pages that work on phones. See [Search engines, analytics and page speed](https://averbo.ai/knowledge/seo-and-analytics). | | Analytics and page speed | Google Analytics and Search Console on the owner's own Google account, and regular Google PageSpeed Insights tests. | | Hosting, https and backups | UK servers in London and Manchester, certificates issued and renewed automatically, and backups of the live database. See [Hosting, security and backups](https://averbo.ai/knowledge/hosting-and-security). | | A staging copy | A private copy of the site where every change is tried first. | | Its own admin panel | Laravel Nova, for the words, pictures, opening hours, bookings, products and enquiries. | | Changes and support | Ordinary changes asked for in plain English, and email and live chat answered by a person in Yorkshire. | | Domain connection | A domain the owner already has, connected, with the records shown and checked. | ## What costs extra | Costs extra | How it is charged | |---|---| | Registering a new domain name | The cost price of the name plus a handling charge, paid once a year and shown in pounds before buying. See [Domain names](https://averbo.ai/knowledge/domains). | | Stripe's card fees | Stripe takes its standard fees from each card payment. British Web Design adds no booking or payment fee of its own. | | Another website | Each website is billed separately at $11.99/month. | | Very large pieces of work | British Web Design talks to the owner first about anything genuinely large. Ordinary changes stay included. | ## What is not offered - **A large online shop.** The shop suits a small business selling a few dozen products with options, not thousands of products kept in step with a stock system. - **Recurring payments.** Memberships, subscriptions and class passes cannot be sold through a British Web Design site. - **A drag-and-drop editor or plugins.** British Web Design sites are Laravel applications, edited through forms in their admin panel, not WordPress or a page builder. - **The owner's own domain during the trial.** During the free trial the site stays on its staging address. ## Questions ### What is included in the price of a British Web Design website? The build, UK hosting, https, backups, a staging copy, the site's own admin panel, the contact form, online booking, card payments and a shop if wanted, analytics and ordinary changes are all included in $11.99/month per website. There is no setup fee and no contract. ### Does a British Web Design website cost more with online booking or a shop? No. A British Web Design site with online booking, payments and a shop costs the same as a brochure site with only a contact form. Stripe takes its own standard fees from card payments. ### What costs extra with British Web Design? Registering a new domain name costs extra: the cost price of the name plus a handling charge, paid once a year and shown before buying. Each additional website is billed separately at the same monthly price. ## Sources - [Pricing](https://averbo.ai/pricing) - [Features](https://averbo.ai/features) - [How it works](https://averbo.ai/how-it-works) - [Your website can now have an online shop](https://averbo.ai/blog/an-online-shop-on-your-website) - [Online booking can now take a deposit, or the whole price](https://averbo.ai/blog/booking-deposits-and-payments) - [Domains](https://averbo.ai/domains) - [Built in Laravel](https://averbo.ai/laravel-business-website) - [Pricing](https://averbo.ai/knowledge/pricing) --- # Online booking and deposits > How online booking works on a British Web Design website: appointments, tables, classes and whole days, deposits or full payment by card, a calendar in the admin panel and Google Calendar. A business that only wants enquiries has booking switched off. ## Four ways to take a booking - **Time with a person**: a haircut, a massage, a boiler service. The customer chooses a team member, or anyone, and only sees times when that person is free for the whole appointment. - **Places at a time**: tables at a café or restaurant. The business sets how many people it can take at once, and each booking takes its party size out of that. Setting a lower number keeps tables back for walk-ins. - **Classes at set times**, with the places left shown under each time. - **Whole days**: hire by the day, or the day a job starts. During the build, booking is switched on for a business that takes appointments or reservations, with its services, prices and times already in. ## What the customer sees The booking page takes the site's own colours and type. The customer chooses a service (or a party size), a day and a free time, then gives their name, email address, phone number and a note. No account or app is needed. Availability comes from the opening hours, each team member's hours, time off, the notice needed and the gap wanted between bookings. The check runs again at the moment of booking, so two people cannot take the last slot. The customer gets a confirmation email with a calendar file, and can cancel from its link up to a set number of hours before, if the business allows it. ## Deposits and paying up front A British Web Design site can take nothing online, a deposit or the whole price when someone books. In the admin panel's Booking settings the owner can make the deposit a fixed amount or a percentage, give a service its own deposit or none, ask for a deposit from new clients only, or let the customer choose between the deposit and the whole price. A service with no price, such as a free quote visit, is booked without paying. While the customer pays on Stripe's secure page, the time is held for them for 30 minutes unless the owner changes it; if they do not pay, the time is free again. Payments go into the owner's own Stripe account, by card, Apple Pay or Google Pay. Until Stripe is linked, bookings are paid on the day. See [Card payments and online shops](https://averbo.ai/knowledge/payments-and-shop). ## The calendar, and Google Calendar Every booking is emailed to the owner and shown on a calendar in the site's admin panel, by day, week or month, coloured by team member. The owner can add bookings taken by phone, confirm each booking or let them confirm straight away, move or cancel a booking (refunding what was paid), and mark a no-show. An owner who uses Google Calendar can connect it once from Booking settings. Every booking then becomes an event, with the customer invited (this can be switched off), and moves or leaves the calendar when the booking does. If Google cannot be reached, the booking still goes ahead. ## How different businesses use it | Business | How booking is usually set up | |---|---| | Salon or barber | Treatments with prices and times, a choice of therapist, a deposit to cut no-shows | | Plumber or heating engineer | Boiler services paid in full when booked, free quote visits alongside, emergencies by phone only | | Builder | Free quote visits and paid design consultations, only on the days set aside for visits | | Café | Tables by party size, afternoon tea priced per person | British Web Design has set up made-up example businesses to show each of these working with test cards: a [salon](https://averbo.ai/beauty-salon-website-with-online-booking), a [plumber](https://averbo.ai/plumber-website-with-online-booking), a [builder](https://averbo.ai/builder-website-with-online-booking) and a [café](https://averbo.ai/cafe-website-with-table-booking). ## Limits - Recurring payments and class passes are not available. - Each booking is one visit, so a landlord with three properties books three. - A business already using Fresha or Treatwell can keep it: British Web Design can put a **Book now** button on every page linking to the existing booking page, and leave its own booking switched off. ## Questions ### Can a British Web Design website take bookings? Yes. Online booking is built into every British Web Design website at no extra cost, for appointments, tables by party size, classes and whole-day bookings. A business that only wants enquiries can leave it switched off. ### Can customers pay a deposit when they book on a British Web Design site? Yes. A British Web Design site can take a deposit, as a fixed amount or a percentage, or the whole price when someone books, by card, Apple Pay or Google Pay, into the owner's own Stripe account. A free quote visit is booked without paying. ### Does online booking cost extra with British Web Design? No. Online booking is part of the $11.99/month for each British Web Design website, and there is no fee per booking. Payments and the shop are part of the monthly price, and are only switched on for a business that wants them. ## How payments work British Web Design is a Stripe Connect platform. When the owner presses **Take payments** on the British Web Design dashboard, Stripe's own sign-up asks for the business details and the bank account to pay into, and the owner ends up with a Stripe account of their own, with Stripe's full dashboard. No Stripe account is needed beforehand. - **The money goes to the business.** Each payment is made on the owner's own Stripe account and paid out by Stripe to the owner's bank. British Web Design never holds customers' money. - **The site never sees a card number.** Customers pay on Stripe's own secure checkout page, which shows Apple Pay and Google Pay where the customer's device has them. - **Refunds** are made from the site's admin panel. - **Test first.** The staging copy of every British Web Design site takes test payments through British Web Design's own Stripe test account, so the owner can book or buy with Stripe's test cards and no money moves. Until Stripe is linked, the live site still shows the shop, and its checkout says online payment is not set up yet. A site transferred to a new owner leaves the Stripe account with its previous owner, and its live payments stop until the new owner links their own. ## Fees Stripe charges its standard fees on each payment, taken before the money reaches the bank: see [Stripe's pricing](https://stripe.com/gb/pricing). The owner's Stripe account pays those fees to Stripe directly. British Web Design adds no booking fee or payment fee of its own, and taking payments is part of the $11.99/month for each website. ## The shop The shop on a British Web Design site is part of the site, in the site's own colours. - **Products and options.** Each product has its own page with all its pictures. Options such as size or scent can be shown as pictures, colours, buttons or a list, each with its own price and stock if wanted. - **The basket** slides out without the page reloading and shows the real total before payment, with delivery, any discount and VAT. - **Discount codes** for a percentage off, an amount off or free delivery, limited to some products, a minimum spend, dates or a number of uses if wanted. - **Delivery and collection.** Delivery options with their own prices, free delivery over a set amount, and collection in person. For anything made to order, customers can choose a collection or delivery time, with a cut-off such as "order by 2pm for tomorrow" and a limit on orders for each time. - **Downloads.** A product can be a file, such as sheet music as a PDF, or a file offered beside a posted version. After paying, the customer gets a download link that works for 30 days unless the owner changes it. Files of up to 500 MB can be uploaded, and stay private to customers who have paid. - **Food labels** such as V, VG or GF, and allergen information. - **Orders** are emailed to the owner and listed in the admin panel. Marking an order as sent with a tracking number emails the customer, and orders can be refunded in full or in part. Stock is counted down only when an order is paid for. Prices are entered as the price the customer pays, with VAT included if the business is registered. British Web Design does not give tax advice. ## Who the shop suits, and who it does not The shop suits a small business that sells a few things alongside what it does: a candle maker with a couple of dozen scents, a café taking celebration cake orders, a salon with its own aftercare products. British Web Design sets no limit on the number of products, but the shop is not built for thousands of products kept in step with a stock system, or for trade accounts. Recurring payments, such as memberships or subscriptions, are not available. ## Questions ### Can a British Web Design website take card payments? Yes. Every British Web Design website can take card, Apple Pay and Google Pay payments through Stripe, for bookings and for a shop. The owner switches it on with the Take payments button on the dashboard, and the money goes into their own Stripe account. ### Does British Web Design hold my customers' money? No. Payments are made on the business's own Stripe account and paid out by Stripe to the business's bank. British Web Design never holds the money, and a British Web Design website never sees a card number. ### What fees are there on payments taken through a British Web Design site? Stripe charges its standard fees on each payment, as listed on Stripe's pricing page. British Web Design adds no fee of its own, and taking payments is part of the $11.99/month per website. ## Sources - [Your website can now have an online shop](https://averbo.ai/blog/an-online-shop-on-your-website) - [Online booking can now take a deposit, or the whole price](https://averbo.ai/blog/booking-deposits-and-payments) - [Online shop websites](https://averbo.ai/online-shop-website) - [Example websites](https://averbo.ai/example-websites) - [Stripe pricing](https://stripe.com/gb/pricing) - [Stripe Connect](https://stripe.com/gb/connect) - [Online booking and deposits](https://averbo.ai/knowledge/online-booking) --- # Domain names > How domain names work with British Web Design: buying a .co.uk or other name from the dashboard in the owner's own name, connecting a name they already have, DNS, renewals and leaving. This article covers buying a name, connecting one, DNS records, renewals and what happens on leaving. ## Buying a new domain The domains page of the British Web Design dashboard searches for a name and suggests others. Every result is checked live with the registry, so the price shown in pounds is the real one. British Web Design registers domains through Cloudflare Registrar, which sells names at cost; the customer pays that cost plus a handling charge, by card through Stripe. There is no separate management fee and no charge for the DNS or the certificate. Before payment, the dashboard asks for the registrant details: the customer's own name, address, phone number and email address. Some registries ask for more: Nominet, which runs .uk names, asks what kind of registrant a name is for. These answers are checked before any money moves, so a name is never paid for and then refused for a missing detail. WHOIS privacy is free and always on. Once the name is registered, British Web Design writes the records that point it at the website, and the https certificate is issued as soon as the name resolves. Nothing has to be copied or pasted. A registration that fails can be tried again from the dashboard without paying twice. ## Confirming the email address Under ICANN's rules a registry may email the registrant a link to confirm their email address, and a name whose link is never clicked can be suspended, usually within 15 days. Because the domain is in the customer's name, that email goes to the customer. The British Web Design dashboard shows a notice with the address the link went to and the deadline, and British Web Design emails an explanation. An address at the name being registered cannot receive the link, because that mailbox does not exist yet, and the dashboard says so. ## Connecting a domain the customer already owns A name registered elsewhere stays where it is. The domain's DNS page on the British Web Design dashboard shows the two records to add at the current provider, and checks them until they are right. Alternatively, the customer can move the name's DNS to British Web Design by changing its nameservers at their registrar, and then edit its records on the dashboard. Connecting a domain costs nothing extra. ## DNS records A domain whose DNS British Web Design manages has a DNS page where the customer can add, change and remove A, AAAA, CNAME, MX and TXT records, for example MX records for an email provider. The records that point the website at its server are marked, and the page warns before they are changed. ## Renewals The first year is paid when the name is bought. Each year after that is a yearly payment of its own, charged to the card saved at purchase about 30 days before the name expires, at the renewal price quoted when it was bought. An auto-renew switch on the domains page turns renewal on or off. A domain bought through British Web Design keeps renewing whatever happens to the customer's websites, until the customer switches auto-renew off. ## During the free trial During the free trial a British Web Design site stays on its staging address. A domain can be bought or connected during the trial so it is ready, and the live site is built on it when the owner presses Go live and starts paying. ## Leaving A domain bought through British Web Design is registered to the customer, not to British Web Design. If the customer leaves, the name goes with them: British Web Design does not hold it back and charges no transfer-out fee. A name connected from elsewhere never moved, so it can simply be pointed somewhere else. See [Cancelling and what you keep](https://averbo.ai/knowledge/cancelling). ## Questions ### Do I own my domain name with British Web Design? Yes. A domain bought through British Web Design is registered in the customer's own name, with the customer as the registrant, and it stays theirs if they leave. There is no transfer-out fee. ### Can I use a domain I already have with British Web Design? Yes. A name registered elsewhere stays with its current provider. The British Web Design dashboard shows the two records to add there and checks them until they work, at no extra cost. ### How much does a domain cost through British Web Design? The price is shown in pounds before buying: the cost price of the name plus a handling charge, paid once a year. Connecting a domain the customer already owns costs nothing extra. ### Which domain endings can I buy through British Web Design? This article describes how British Web Design sites are hosted and protected. ## Servers British Web Design's servers are in London and Manchester. British Web Design sets them up and runs them itself, over SSH, with its own tools for deployments, certificates, background processes and backups. Each British Web Design site is a Laravel application with: - its own MySQL database, and a database user that can reach only that database - its own private code repository on GitHub, read with a key that works for that repository alone, so one site can never reach another site's code - its own storage bucket on Amazon S3 for pictures, videos and files, with a storage user whose permissions cover that bucket only - its own email sending through Postmark, from an authenticated sending domain, so enquiry emails land in the inbox rather than the spam folder British Web Design sites are not WordPress, so there are no plugins to install or keep up to date. ## Staging and live Every British Web Design site is hosted twice. The live site is what the public sees. The staging copy is the same site at a testing address under on-britishwebs.com, where every change lands first. The two are separate sites on the same server, with separate databases, deployed from separate branches of the same code. A change reaches the live site only when the owner approves it. The staging copy is open to anyone with the link, but every page tells search engines not to list it, and its card payments are always test payments. Where a site's staging copy is set to follow the live site, staging is refreshed from a backup of the live database before each change, so the change is previewed on the real content. ## https and Cloudflare Every domain on a live British Web Design site gets a Let's Encrypt certificate, issued once the domain points at the server and renewed automatically. Staging addresses sit behind Cloudflare, which provides their certificates. Domains bought through British Web Design have their DNS on Cloudflare, edited from the dashboard. ## Backups The database of every live British Web Design site is backed up into a separate storage bucket that holds nothing but backups. Each server uploads its backup through an address signed for that one file, so no server holds a key to the bucket. Public access to it is blocked, it is encrypted, and it refuses plain http. By default a backup is taken daily and the last 14 are kept. A fresh backup is also taken before every release to the live site, and the deployment makes its own copy on the server just before any database change runs. Staging copies are not backed up. If a site's hosting is ever deleted, its backups are kept. ## Uploads, forms and signing in - Photographs sent through the British Web Design dashboard are checked by their contents, not their names, so a disguised file is refused. SVG files, which can carry scripts, are not accepted as photographs. - Files sold as downloads stay private, handed only to customers who have paid, through links that expire. - Contact and enquiry forms use a hidden honeypot field and Google reCAPTCHA v3 against spam. - Signing in to a site's admin panel from the dashboard uses a single-use link that expires after 60 seconds and only works over https. ## Updates and error tracking British Web Design updates the software its sites run on, including Laravel and British Web Design's own packages for booking, payments and the platform, on the staging copy and the live site. These platform updates do not need the owner's approval, and a backup is taken before each one reaches a live site. Every British Web Design site reports its errors to British Web Design, including page errors, failed background jobs and PHP warnings, with the details needed to fix them. Passwords, tokens, cookies and card numbers are removed before a report leaves the site, and new errors are emailed to the British Web Design team. Page speed is tested regularly too: see [Search engines, analytics and page speed](https://averbo.ai/knowledge/seo-and-analytics). ## Questions ### Where are British Web Design websites hosted? British Web Design hosts its websites on its own servers in the UK, in London and Manchester, which it runs itself. Hosting is included in the $11.99/month per website. ### Are British Web Design websites backed up? Yes. The database of every live British Web Design site is backed up to separate private storage, daily by default, and again before every release. Staging copies are not backed up. ### Do British Web Design websites have SSL? Yes. Every domain on a British Web Design site gets an https certificate that is issued and renewed automatically, at no extra cost. ### Is a British Web Design website built on WordPress? No. Every British Web Design site is a Laravel (PHP) application with its own admin panel, so there are no WordPress plugins or themes to keep up to date. ## Sources - [Features](https://averbo.ai/features) - [Built in Laravel](https://averbo.ai/laravel-business-website) - [About](https://averbo.ai/about) - [Privacy policy](https://averbo.ai/privacy) - [Let's Encrypt](https://letsencrypt.org/) - [The technology behind the sites](https://averbo.ai/knowledge/technology) --- # Changes, editing and support > How British Web Design customers ask for changes in plain English, how each change is checked and approved before it goes live, how owners edit their own site, and how support works. Owners can also edit the words, pictures and opening hours themselves, in the site's own admin panel. ## Asking for a change A British Web Design customer can ask for a change in three places: **Ask for a change** on the site's page in the British Web Design dashboard; the **Ask for a change** button on any page of their own site, shown to the owner when signed in, which records the page and can take a screenshot of it; or **Request a change** in the site's admin panel. A change is written in the owner's own words, such as "Make the header cream, add a Christmas opening hours banner." It can come with up to six pictures or PDFs: a screenshot with something circled, a photo for the page, or a new menu or price list, which is turned into pages item by item. British Web Design can also enter a change that came in by phone or email. ## What happens to a change 1. A person at British Web Design reads the request. It is approved, or turned down with the reason given to the owner word for word. 2. The change is made on the site as it stands, changing as little as possible. Several changes to one site are made one at a time, in order. 3. The change is put on the staging copy, and the owner is emailed to come and look. 4. The owner approves it, from the bar on the staging site or from the dashboard, and it goes live. The owner is emailed at each step. A change nobody has started on can be withdrawn, and up to ten changes can wait to be started at once. British Web Design can also ask the owner a question about a change, and the owner answers on the change itself, with pictures or PDFs if they like. The dashboard shows each site's changes as a timeline, newest first, with every step and every message. Every change is kept in the site's code history, so British Web Design can roll one back without losing anything. ## What is included Ordinary changes are included in the $11.99/month per website: new prices, another service, different photographs, another page. There is no hourly rate. For a second website or something genuinely large, British Web Design talks to the owner first. Once a free trial has ended without a card being added, changes cannot be asked for until the subscription starts. ## Editing the site yourself Every British Web Design site has its own admin panel, built on Laravel Nova, opened from the dashboard with **Open admin panel** and no separate password. In it the owner can change: - the business details: name, tagline, logo, phone, email, address, opening hours and social media links - the words and pictures on each page, and each page's title and description for search engines - the menus, blog posts, videos and picture library - bookings, products, orders and discount codes, where the site has them - tracking tags such as Google Analytics and Meta Pixel Enquiries sent through the contact form are kept in the admin panel as well as emailed. The admin panel opens with a short setup wizard and has an editing guide. It is a set of forms, not a drag-and-drop page editor. Where a site's staging copy follows the live site, content is edited on the live site and the staging admin panel is read-only. ## Support British Web Design is run by its founder, James, from Yorkshire. Email, the [contact form](https://averbo.ai/contact) and the live chat on britishwebs.com are answered by a person in Yorkshire on UK time, usually the same working day. There is no sales team, no ticket queue and no chatbot. When nobody is at the desk, the chat says so and the answer comes by email. ## Questions ### How do I change my British Web Design website? Ask for the change in plain English from the British Web Design dashboard, from the Ask for a change button on the site, or in the site's admin panel. A person checks it, it is made on the staging copy, and it goes live when the owner approves it. ### Do changes cost extra with British Web Design? No. Ordinary changes such as new prices, a new service, different photographs or another page are included in the British Web Design monthly price, with no hourly rate. British Web Design talks to the owner first about anything genuinely large, such as a second website. ### Can I edit my British Web Design website myself? Yes. Every British Web Design site has its own admin panel, built on Laravel Nova, where the owner can change the words, pictures, opening hours, menus, bookings and products. It uses forms rather than a drag-and-drop editor. ### Who answers support at British Web Design? A person in Yorkshire answers British Web Design email and live chat on UK time, usually the same working day. British Web Design has no chatbot and no sales team. ## Sources - [Features](https://averbo.ai/features) - [How it works](https://averbo.ai/how-it-works) - [Pricing](https://averbo.ai/pricing) - [About](https://averbo.ai/about) - [Contact](https://averbo.ai/contact) - [Who is behind British Web Design](https://averbo.ai/knowledge/founder) - [How a website gets built](https://averbo.ai/knowledge/how-it-works) --- # Search engines, analytics and page speed > What every British Web Design website does for search engines, how Google Analytics and Search Console are set up on the owner's own account, and how page speed is measured over time. Page speed is measured with Google PageSpeed Insights after every release and every day. ## What every site does for search engines Each page of a British Web Design site has its own page title (up to 60 characters) and description (up to 160), written for a person deciding whether to click and editable by the owner in the admin panel. Each page also has a canonical address, Open Graph and Twitter tags for sharing, one main heading, headings in order, and alt text on every image. Every layout works on a phone 360 pixels wide, a tablet and a desktop, with no sideways scrolling. Every British Web Design site serves its own sitemap at /sitemap.xml, built from the pages it has when it is asked, so a new page is in it straight away. The pages are written around the services the business offers and the area it covers, which is what local searches look for. Most sites have a blog with posts written for the business, and each post carries structured data. The private staging copy of every site is kept out of search engines, so only the live site is indexed. British Web Design does not guarantee a position in Google. How a page ranks depends on Google and on the competition. ## Google Analytics and Search Console, on the owner's account The owner connects their own Google account once, from the analytics page of the British Web Design dashboard. For each live site, British Web Design then: 1. creates a Google Analytics 4 property under the owner's Analytics account, or uses one the owner already has 2. adds a data stream for the site and puts its measurement ID into the site, which starts reporting on the next page it serves 3. proves to Google that the owner controls the site, with a verification tag 4. adds the site to Google Search Console and submits its sitemap A weekly check makes sure Google holds the sitemap for the address the site answers on today, for example after it moves from its testing address to its own domain. The property, the data and the Search Console history belong to the owner's Google account, and disconnecting leaves all of them in place. Google Tag Manager, Meta Pixel, Google Ads, LinkedIn, TikTok and Microsoft UET can be added in the site's admin panel by pasting in an ID. The British Web Design privacy policy says these tags do not load until the visitor accepts them in a consent banner on the site, and every site supports Google Consent Mode v2. ## Figures in plain English The British Web Design dashboard shows, for the whole account and for each site, the visitors, page views, where visitors came from, the most-read pages, what people searched for on Google, clicks and impressions from search, and enquiries. Enquiries are counted from the contact form messages the site recorded, so they are counted even for an owner who has never connected Google. Figures are refreshed every three hours. Until a site has reported something, the dashboard shows no traffic figures at all rather than placeholder numbers. ## Page speed over time Every British Web Design site is tested with Lighthouse through Google PageSpeed Insights, about ten minutes after each release goes live and once a day. The site's dashboard page shows the four Lighthouse scores (performance, accessibility, best practices and SEO), the Core Web Vitals, what Google suggests fixing, and a chart of the performance score over time. When a site's mobile performance score falls below 80, British Web Design opens a speed pass on the site: a change aimed only at what Lighthouse found slow, not a redesign. A site is sent back for speed work at most twice in 30 days. The owner is not asked to approve speed work, and is emailed when the score rises by more than ten points. ## Questions ### Is a British Web Design website good for SEO? Every British Web Design site has its own title and description on each page, a canonical address, sharing tags, a sitemap, alt text on images and a layout that works on phones, and its pages are written around the business's services and area. British Web Design does not guarantee a ranking. ### Does British Web Design set up Google Analytics? Yes. Once the owner connects their Google account, British Web Design creates a Google Analytics 4 property for each live site, puts its measurement ID into the site, verifies the site and adds it to Google Search Console with its sitemap. ### Who owns the analytics data for a British Web Design website? The owner does. The Google Analytics property, its data and the Search Console history are on the owner's own Google account, and disconnecting from British Web Design leaves all of them in place. ## Sources - [Analytics](https://averbo.ai/analytics) - [Mobile-friendly business websites](https://averbo.ai/mobile-friendly-business-website) - [Local SEO: the six things that actually matter](https://averbo.ai/blog/local-seo-the-six-things-that-actually-matter) - [Is your website losing customers on mobile?](https://averbo.ai/blog/is-your-website-losing-customers-on-mobile) - [Privacy policy](https://averbo.ai/privacy) - [Google PageSpeed Insights](https://pagespeed.web.dev/) - [Google Search Console](https://search.google.com/search-console/about) --- # Pricing > British Web Design sells one plan, priced per website each month, with the build, UK hosting and changes included, no setup fee and no contract. There is no setup fee, no contract and no hourly rate for changes. ## What the monthly price covers Every British Web Design website is built for the owner from a sentence or two about the business, then hosted, updated and changed by British Web Design for as long as the owner stays. The monthly price covers the design, the words and the build, checked by a person; hosting on UK servers in London and Manchester, with https and backups; the domain connected; a contact form, visitor figures and the site's own admin panel; and changes whenever the owner asks. Online booking with deposits, card payments and a shop are part of every site, and a brochure site with only a contact form costs the same. The full list is in [what every website includes](https://averbo.ai/knowledge/whats-included). ## What is included and what costs extra | What is included | What costs extra | |---|---| | Building the website from the owner's brief | Registering a new domain name, charged once a year | | UK hosting, https and backups | Stripe's standard fee on each card payment (charged by Stripe, not by British Web Design) | | Connecting a domain the owner already has | Each further website on the account, at the same per-site price | | Online booking, deposits, card payments and a shop | | | Changes asked for in plain English | | | Visitor figures and the site's own admin panel | | British Web Design's pricing page says the only thing that costs extra from British Web Design itself is registering a new domain. Ordinary changes, such as new prices, another service, different photographs or an extra page, are part of the monthly price, and something much larger, such as a second website, is talked through first. ## Domain names A domain bought through British Web Design costs the registry price plus a handling charge, paid once a year and shown in pounds before the owner buys. There is no separate management fee, and no charge for the DNS records, the certificate or WHOIS privacy. A domain is not refundable once the registry has registered it. A domain the owner already holds elsewhere is connected at no charge. The [domain names article](https://averbo.ai/knowledge/domains) has the detail. ## Several websites on one account The Business plan is priced per website, so an account with three websites pays for three. Drafts are free and unlimited: a website takes a place on the plan when its build starts, because that is when it is given a server, a code repository and a database. Adding a website part of the way through a month charges for the rest of that month at the new number of sites, and deleting one is reflected on the next invoice. A subscription never goes below one website. Per-site pricing is why British Web Design also suits web designers, agencies and people who run several businesses (see [for agencies](https://averbo.ai/for-agencies)). ## Billing, VAT and price changes British Web Design bills through Stripe, monthly in advance and in pounds, to the card on file. Cards, invoices and cancellation are on the owner's billing page, which Stripe runs. British Web Design's terms of service say the prices shown on the pricing page and on the billing page include VAT where it applies. There is no introductory rate that rises after a few months. British Web Design's terms allow prices to change, but never during a period already paid for, and only after at least 30 days' notice by email. Founding members keep their price for as long as they stay (see [founding members](https://averbo.ai/knowledge/founding-members)). ## Questions ### How much does a British Web Design website cost? A British Web Design website costs $11.99/month per website, with no setup fee. The price includes the build, UK hosting, the domain connected and changes when the owner asks. Every plan starts with a 7-day free trial that needs no card. ### Is there a setup fee or a contract with British Web Design? No. British Web Design charges no setup fee, has no minimum term and no notice period, and the owner can cancel from the billing page at any time. The last month paid for is the last month billed. ### Does British Web Design charge for changes? No. Ordinary changes, such as new prices, another service, different photographs or an extra page, are included in the British Web Design monthly price with no hourly rate. Something much larger, such as a second website, is talked through first. ### Do British Web Design prices include VAT? British Web Design's terms of service say the prices shown on the pricing page and on the billing page include VAT where it applies. British Web Design is a trading name of Bind CRM Limited, whose VAT number is GB 424058907. ## Sources - [Pricing](https://averbo.ai/pricing) - [Domains](https://averbo.ai/domains) - [Terms of service](https://averbo.ai/terms) - [For agencies](https://averbo.ai/for-agencies) - [What should a small business website cost in the UK?](https://averbo.ai/what-should-a-small-business-website-cost) - [Pay monthly or pay up front? When the last place is taken, the price for new customers goes up and founding members stay exactly where they are. ## How founding places work While founding places are on sale, the Business plan is offered at a founding price to a set number of customers. Each founding member keeps that price for as long as their subscription runs, including after the price for new customers has gone up. A cancelled subscription keeps its place until it actually ends. The founding price is a price for a set number of customers, not an introductory rate. It does not rise after a few months, and British Web Design's pages promise founding members that price for as long as they stay. ## How the places are counted The number of places left is not a marketing figure typed in by hand. British Web Design counts it from its own database: the customers with a subscription on the founding price that is paying, overdue on a payment, or in a free trial with a card added. Each customer counts once, however many websites they have. A free trial without a card is not a subscription, so it never takes a place. British Web Design's own accounts, staff and test accounts are left out. The count is refreshed within a minute of a subscription starting or ending, and every British Web Design page that quotes the offer reads the same number: the pricing page, the plan cards, the counter on the home page, the checkout and the facts box on this article. ## When the places have gone When the last founding place is taken, British Web Design's pricing moves on by itself: - The plan at the higher price goes on sale for new customers, and the founding price comes off sale. - Founding members are not moved. They stay on the founding price for as long as they stay. - A free trial without a card moves to the new price. A free trial with a card already added holds its place, and pays the founding price when the trial ends. - The founding wording comes off every British Web Design page, and the place figures in this article's facts box disappear. The switch is checked whenever a subscription changes, before each checkout, and every five minutes in case a notice from Stripe goes missing. ## Questions ### How many British Web Design founding places are left? The live count of British Web Design founding places is in the facts box at the top of this article and on the British Web Design pricing page. It is counted from real subscriptions, not set by hand. When the facts box shows no places, the founding offer has ended. ### Do British Web Design founding members keep their price? Yes. A British Web Design founding member keeps the founding price for as long as their subscription runs, even after the price for new customers has gone up. The higher price applies to new customers only. ### What does British Web Design ask of founding members? British Web Design asks each founding member for an honest quote it can show on its website and, if they are happy to, a short case study. A quote only appears if the customer has given it, and a case study is only published once the customer has approved it. ### Does a British Web Design free trial take a founding place? A British Web Design free trial without a card does not take a founding place, because it is not a subscription. A trial with a card added does hold a place, and becomes a paying subscription at the founding price when the trial ends. ## Sources - [Pricing](https://averbo.ai/pricing) - [Terms of service](https://averbo.ai/terms) - [Pricing](https://averbo.ai/knowledge/pricing) - [The free trial](https://averbo.ai/knowledge/free-trial) - [Platform figures](https://averbo.ai/knowledge/platform-figures) - [Policies and the rules we keep](https://averbo.ai/knowledge/policies) --- # The free trial > Every British Web Design plan starts with a free trial that needs no card: the site is built and tried on a private address, and nothing is charged unless the owner carries on. The owner adds a card through Stripe only to carry on, and nothing is charged before the trial ends. ## How the trial starts A visitor writes a sentence or two about the business, creates an account, and the free trial starts straight away. Nothing is set up at Stripe and no card details are asked for. The trial runs on the plan that is on sale, Business. The trial length quoted on British Web Design's pages is read from the same setting the billing system uses, so the trial advertised is the trial given. ## What the owner can do during the trial During the free trial, a British Web Design customer can: - have one website built from their brief, and watch it build with a live log (drafts of further sites can be saved without limit) - see the site on its own private address ending .on-britishwebs.com, once a person at British Web Design has checked it - try it properly: book an appointment or buy something with Stripe's test card (4242 4242 4242 4242, any future date, any three numbers), with no money moving - ask for changes in plain English from the dashboard, and edit words, photographs and opening hours in the site's own admin panel - show the site to anyone they send the link to, while search engines are kept out of it - get the domain ready: register a new name in their own name (a separate charge, paid when it is bought) or set up one they already own - add a card early from the plan page, with nothing charged until the trial ends ## What waits until the plan starts Two things wait until the subscription starts. The site does not go live on the owner's own domain during the free trial: it stays on its private address until the owner subscribes, which stops the trial being used as free hosting. And search engines do not list it, because the private address is kept out of search results so that it never competes with the real site later. An owner who wants the site live sooner can end the trial early and start paying from the plan page. ## When the trial ends British Web Design emails the owner two days before the trial ends, and once after. What happens next depends on the owner: - **With a card added**, the subscription starts by itself when the trial ends, and the site can go live on the owner's domain. - **Without a card**, nothing is charged and nothing more happens. The dashboard asks the owner to choose a plan and add a card through Stripe Checkout, and their sites and drafts wait untouched. - **Cancelled before the end**, a plan with a card on it costs nothing. Any domain registered during the trial stays registered in the owner's name either way. While founding places are on sale, a trial with a card added holds a founding place and a trial without a card does not (see [founding members](https://averbo.ai/knowledge/founding-members)). ## Questions ### Do I need a card for the British Web Design free trial? No. The British Web Design free trial starts when the account is created, with no card. A card is added through Stripe only when the owner wants to carry on, and nothing is charged before the trial ends. ### What happens when the British Web Design free trial ends? If a card has been added, the British Web Design subscription starts by itself at the end of the trial. If not, nothing is charged, and the owner's sites and drafts wait on the account until they choose a plan. British Web Design emails a reminder two days before the trial ends. ### Can I use my own domain during the British Web Design free trial? No. During the free trial a British Web Design site stays on its private address, and it goes live on the owner's domain once the subscription starts. The owner can register or set up the domain during the trial so that it is ready. ### How long is the British Web Design free trial? The British Web Design free trial lasts 7 days. The figure on British Web Design's pages comes from the same setting the billing system uses, so the trial advertised is the trial given. ## Sources - [The free trial](https://averbo.ai/free-trial-business-website) - [Pricing](https://averbo.ai/pricing) - [Terms of service](https://averbo.ai/terms) - [How a website gets built](https://averbo.ai/knowledge/how-it-works) - [Founding members](https://averbo.ai/knowledge/founding-members) - [Cancelling and what you keep](https://averbo.ai/knowledge/cancelling) --- # Cancelling and what you keep > A British Web Design plan can be cancelled any time from the billing page: the site stays up to the end of the paid period, and the domain stays in the owner's name. A domain registered through British Web Design stays in the owner's name, and the owner can take it elsewhere. ## How to cancel Cancelling takes one click on the billing page, which Stripe runs for British Web Design, with no phone call and no notice. Cancellation takes effect at the end of the period already paid for, and the last month paid for is the last month billed. Under British Web Design's terms, no refund is due for the rest of a month already paid. A plan cancelled during the free trial costs nothing. An owner with several websites who only wants to close one can delete that website instead. Deleting a built website takes it off the subscription, and the change shows on the next invoice. ## What happens to the website The website stays up until the end of the paid period. It is then taken down and kept for 30 days, so that a cancellation made by mistake can be undone. After the 30 days the website and its content are deleted. British Web Design's terms ask owners to take a copy of anything they want to keep before then. ## The domain name A domain bought through British Web Design is registered in the owner's name, with the owner as the registrant. It belongs to the owner, not to British Web Design, and leaving does not change that. The owner can point it at any other website afterwards, and British Web Design will help transfer it to another registrar, with no transfer-out fee. A domain the owner bought elsewhere and pointed at their British Web Design site never moved: only its DNS records need changing. Domain renewals are a yearly charge of their own, separate from the website plan, and carry on until automatic renewal is switched off. An owner who is leaving should decide whether to keep renewing the name or move it. ## The content, and what does not move British Web Design's terms say the owner owns the content they supplied and the content written for their site (the words, the page structure and the images chosen for it, subject to the photographs' own licences), and can export or move it. British Web Design will send the text and images on request. Stock photographs come from Unsplash and Pixabay under their own licences. What does not leave is the running website itself. British Web Design owns the platform: the builder, the template every site starts from and the code that runs the sites. A British Web Design site is not exported as a working application, so moving to another provider means rebuilding the site there from its content, which British Web Design's own pages call the trade-off of a monthly service with no minimum term. The Stripe account a site's payments go into is the owner's own, so the record of past payments stays with the owner. ## Handing a site to another customer A website can be moved from one British Web Design account to another, for example when a business changes hands. British Web Design emails the offer to the new owner, who accepts it from the Transfers tab on their dashboard; accepting takes a place on their plan. The website, its domains and its history move together. The Stripe account stays with the previous owner, so live card payments stop until the new owner links their own with **Take payments**. ## If a payment fails If a monthly payment fails, British Web Design retries it and emails the owner. Under the terms, British Web Design can suspend the sites until the payment is settled and, after 30 days, end the agreement. ## Questions ### How do I cancel a British Web Design website? A British Web Design subscription is cancelled from the billing page, in one click, at any time. There is no contract, no notice period and no exit fee. The site stays up until the end of the period already paid for. ### What happens to my British Web Design website if I cancel? The British Web Design website stays up until the end of the paid period, then it is taken down and kept for 30 days in case the cancellation was a mistake. After that the site and its content are deleted, so the owner should take a copy of anything they want to keep before then. ### Do I keep my domain name if I leave British Web Design? Yes. A domain registered through British Web Design is registered in the owner's name and stays theirs after they leave. British Web Design will help transfer it to another registrar, and there is no transfer-out fee. ### Can I take my British Web Design website to another host? The content of a British Web Design website belongs to the owner, and British Web Design will send the text and images on request. The site itself runs on British Web Design's platform and is not exported as a working application, so another provider would rebuild it from that content. ## Sources - [Cancel anytime](https://averbo.ai/cancel-anytime-website) - [Terms of service](https://averbo.ai/terms) - [Pricing](https://averbo.ai/pricing) - [Domains](https://averbo.ai/domains) - [Using your own domain](https://averbo.ai/custom-domain-business-website) - [Pay monthly or pay up front?](https://averbo.ai/blog/pay-monthly-or-pay-up-front-for-a-website) - [Domain names](https://averbo.ai/knowledge/domains) --- # British Web Design compared with Wix, Squarespace, WordPress and agencies > How British Web Design differs from DIY builders such as Wix and Squarespace, WordPress, AI website builders, agencies and pay-monthly web designers, and when each suits better. This article sets out the structural differences, and says when another option is the better choice. ## Done for you, not DIY With a DIY builder the owner chooses a template, writes the words, arranges the pages and makes every later change. With British Web Design the owner writes a brief, the site is built in a few minutes with a live log, a person checks it, and the owner reads it on a private address before anything is public. Changes are asked for in plain English. The owner can edit words and photographs in the site's admin panel, but there is no drag-and-drop editor. ## How the other options differ - **Wix and Squarespace.** British Web Design's own pages call Wix a capable editor and Squarespace's designs genuinely good, but on either the owner builds and maintains the site inside the builder's platform. Moving to British Web Design is a rebuild from the old site's words and pictures. See [compared with Wix](https://averbo.ai/vs-wix) and [compared with Squarespace](https://averbo.ai/vs-squarespace). - **WordPress.** A WordPress site needs its software, theme and plugins kept up to date, by the owner or a developer. A British Web Design site has no plugins, and British Web Design does the updates. WordPress is more flexible and easier to move to another host. See [compared with WordPress](https://averbo.ai/vs-wordpress) and [compared with 10Web](https://averbo.ai/vs-10web). - **AI website builders.** Instant generators make a site in seconds ([Durable](https://averbo.ai/vs-durable)), builder platforms draft one with AI and hand over their editor ([Hostinger](https://averbo.ai/vs-hostinger), [GoDaddy](https://averbo.ai/vs-godaddy)), and some add people to the process ([B12](https://averbo.ai/vs-b12)). British Web Design is in the last group: a person checks for invented experience, accreditations, testimonials and service areas, which takes days rather than seconds. See [AI website builders compared](https://averbo.ai/ai-website-builders-compared). - **Web design agencies.** British Web Design's pricing page puts an agency's bill for a small business site at £1,000 to £5,000 before launch. An agency offers original brand design, an account manager and large or complex sites, which British Web Design does not. See [compared with an agency](https://averbo.ai/vs-agency). - **Pay-monthly web designers.** Terms vary, and some deals carry a minimum term, a notice period or a domain registered in the designer's name. British Web Design has none of those, and includes changes without an allowance. See [pay-monthly websites compared](https://averbo.ai/vs-pay-monthly-websites). ## Side by side | | British Web Design | DIY builder (Wix, Squarespace) | WordPress site | Web design agency | |---|---|---|---|---| | Who builds it | British Web Design, from a brief | The owner, in the editor | The owner or a developer | The agency | | Checked before it is public by | A person at British Web Design, then the owner | The owner | Whoever built it | The agency and the owner | | Runs on | PHP and Laravel, on UK servers | The builder's own platform | WordPress, a theme and plugins | The agency's choice | | Making a change | Ask, and it is done; included | The owner, in the editor | The owner or a developer | Usually quoted and billed | | Booking and card payments | Included in every site | Depends on the plan | Depends on the plugins | Depends on the project | | Up-front cost | None | None, but the owner's time | Depends on who builds it | Commonly £1,000 to £5,000 | | Monthly cost | $11.99/month per website | See the provider's website | Hosting, plus any maintenance | Hosting and changes, often billed | *Written in October 2026. The agency figure is the range on British Web Design's [pricing page](https://averbo.ai/pricing).* ## When another option is better - **A DIY builder** suits an owner who enjoys building and has the evenings for it, and is then the cheaper option, as British Web Design's pricing page says. - **WordPress** suits a site that needs unusual plugins, a blog published several times a week, or an owner who wants to move the site freely. - **An agency** suits original brand design, complex functionality or a large site. - **A dedicated e-commerce platform** suits a shop with thousands of products or a stock system to keep in step. ## Questions ### Is British Web Design a website builder like Wix? No. Wix is a DIY builder where the owner builds the site. British Web Design builds the site from a sentence or two about the business, a person checks it, and British Web Design makes later changes on request. ### How does British Web Design compare with Wix on price? British Web Design charges $11.99/month per website, with the build, UK hosting and changes included and no setup fee. Wix's current prices are on Wix's own website. British Web Design's pricing page says that for someone who would rather build the site themselves, a DIY builder is the cheaper option. ### How is British Web Design different from AI website builders? British Web Design uses AI for the first draft, but a person checks the brief and the finished site for invented claims before the owner sees it. British Web Design then makes later changes itself, rather than handing the owner an editor. ## Sources - [Compared with Wix](https://averbo.ai/vs-wix) - [Compared with WordPress](https://averbo.ai/vs-wordpress) - [Compared with an agency](https://averbo.ai/vs-agency) - [Pay-monthly websites compared](https://averbo.ai/vs-pay-monthly-websites) - [AI website builders compared](https://averbo.ai/ai-website-builders-compared) - [Human-checked AI websites](https://averbo.ai/human-checked-ai-websites) - [The technology behind the sites](https://averbo.ai/knowledge/technology) - [Who British Web Design suits, and who it does not](https://averbo.ai/knowledge/who-it-suits) --- # Who British Web Design suits, and who it does not > Who British Web Design suits (UK sole traders and small businesses that want a site built for them) and who it does not (DIY designers, large shops, bespoke software). This article sets out both sides, as plainly as British Web Design's own pages do. ## Who British Web Design suits **Trades and local services.** British Web Design's trades page says sole traders are most of who it is for: plumbers, electricians, gas engineers, builders, roofers, cleaners and the other trades on the [trades page](https://averbo.ai/trades). Fixed-price jobs such as a boiler service or an EICR can be booked and paid for online, while emergencies stay on the phone. **Businesses that take appointments or tables.** Salons, barbers, cafés, physiotherapy clinics, tutors and dog walkers can have online booking built in, with a deposit or the whole price taken by card, Apple Pay or Google Pay. Booking is part of every British Web Design site, not a separate app with its own monthly fee, and a salon already on Fresha or Treatwell can keep it instead. **Owners starting from nothing, or from something old.** British Web Design builds for businesses with [no website](https://averbo.ai/no-website), with only a [Facebook page](https://averbo.ai/facebook-only-business) or with an [outdated website](https://averbo.ai/outdated-website), and for new [sole traders](https://averbo.ai/website-for-sole-traders) and [limited companies](https://averbo.ai/website-for-limited-companies). **Small shops.** A business selling a few dozen products with options, such as candles, celebration cakes for collection, aftercare products or sheet music to download, can have a shop with a basket, discount codes and delivery options (see [online shop websites](https://averbo.ai/online-shop-website)). **Agencies, freelancers and people with several businesses.** The Business plan is priced per website, so a web designer, a marketing freelancer or someone who runs several businesses pays for each site and has each one built and hosted (see [for agencies](https://averbo.ai/for-agencies) and [for marketing freelancers](https://averbo.ai/for-marketing-freelancers)). ## Who British Web Design does not suit - **People who want to design it themselves, pixel by pixel.** A British Web Design site has an admin panel for words, photographs and prices, but no drag-and-drop editor. A DIY builder is the better and cheaper choice for them. - **Large online shops.** The shop is built for a small shop the owner runs. A business with thousands of products, a stock system to keep in step or trade accounts is likely to be better served by a dedicated e-commerce platform. - **Businesses that need bespoke software or bespoke design.** Custom applications, complex functionality and original brand design are agency work (see [compared with an agency](https://averbo.ai/vs-agency)). Memberships, subscriptions and class passes cannot be sold through a British Web Design site. - **Anyone who wants WordPress.** British Web Design sites are built with Laravel. British Web Design does not take over or maintain existing WordPress sites, and a WordPress site is easier to move between hosts. - **Takeaways that want delivery ordering, and B&Bs that need a room-booking engine.** British Web Design's own pages say neither is standard: a takeaway site leads with the menu and a phone number, and a B&B site takes enquiries or links to the booking engine the owner already uses. - **Personal and hobby sites.** British Web Design's terms say the service is for businesses, sole traders, charities and clubs. - **Anyone who needs a site in seconds.** A person checks every British Web Design site, so it takes days rather than seconds. Businesses outside the UK can use British Web Design, and its pages for [Ireland](https://averbo.ai/en-ie), [Australia](https://averbo.ai/en-au) and [the United States](https://averbo.ai/en-us) say plainly what changes: billing is in pounds, the hosting is in the UK and the copy is written in British English unless the owner asks otherwise. ## Questions ### Is British Web Design a good choice for a sole trader? Yes. Sole traders are most of who British Web Design is built for, from plumbers and electricians to cleaners and dog walkers. The owner writes a sentence or two about the work and the area, and British Web Design builds, checks and hosts the site for $11.99/month. ### Can British Web Design build a large online shop? The British Web Design shop suits a few dozen products with options, run by the owner. British Web Design sets no product limit, but a business with thousands of products, a stock system to keep in step or trade accounts should ask first, and a dedicated e-commerce platform may fit better. ### Can I design my British Web Design website myself? Not in a drag-and-drop editor. A British Web Design site has its own admin panel where the owner changes words, photographs, prices and opening hours, and anything bigger is asked for in plain English and made by British Web Design. Someone who wants to lay out every page themselves will be happier with a DIY builder. ### Can British Web Design take over my WordPress site? British Web Design does not take over or maintain existing WordPress sites. It rebuilds the site in Laravel from its content, and the owner's domain can stay where it is registered. ## Sources - [Websites for trades](https://averbo.ai/trades) - [Online shop websites](https://averbo.ai/online-shop-website) - [For agencies](https://averbo.ai/for-agencies) - [Compared with Wix](https://averbo.ai/vs-wix) - [Compared with WordPress](https://averbo.ai/vs-wordpress) - [Terms of service](https://averbo.ai/terms) - [British Web Design compared](https://averbo.ai/knowledge/compared) - [Businesses British Web Design builds for](https://averbo.ai/knowledge/industries) --- # Businesses British Web Design builds for > The kinds of business British Web Design builds websites for, grouped by sector, with the page that describes what goes on each kind of site. The client picks the treatment or the cut, the person and the time, and pays a deposit by card, Apple Pay or Google Pay to cut no-shows, while walk-ins carry on as before. A salon on Fresha or Treatwell, or a barber on Booksy, can keep that system, with a Book now button on every page. - **Hair and beauty salons**: [salons](https://averbo.ai/salons), [salon websites](https://averbo.ai/websites-for-salons) and [a beauty salon website with online booking](https://averbo.ai/beauty-salon-website-with-online-booking) - **Barbers**: [barbers](https://averbo.ai/barbers) and [barber shop websites](https://averbo.ai/websites-for-barbers) ## Food and drink - **Cafés**: [cafés](https://averbo.ai/cafes) (tables booked by party size, afternoon tea paid up front, cakes ordered for collection), [café websites](https://averbo.ai/websites-for-cafes) and [a café website with table booking](https://averbo.ai/cafe-website-with-table-booking) - **Pubs**: [pub websites](https://averbo.ai/websites-for-pubs) (food menus with allergens, what is on, table bookings, functions and rooms) - **Takeaways**: [takeaway websites](https://averbo.ai/websites-for-takeaways) (the full menu, a phone number one tap away and collection offers; online delivery ordering is not part of the standard site) ## Hospitality - **B&Bs and guest houses**: [B&B websites](https://averbo.ai/websites-for-bnb) (a page for each room, rates and the reasons to book direct, availability enquiries and pages about the area). A room-booking engine with live availability is not part of the standard site: a British Web Design B&B site takes enquiries or links to the booking engine the owner already uses. ## Professional services and clinics - **Consultants and coaches**: [consultant websites](https://averbo.ai/websites-for-consultants) (what the owner does, who for, their credentials and how working together goes) - **Tutors**: [tutor websites](https://averbo.ai/websites-for-tutors) (subjects and levels, qualifications, DBS checks, fees and availability) - **Physiotherapy clinics**: [clinic websites](https://averbo.ai/websites-for-physiotherapy) (a page for each condition treated, fees, clinicians and registrations such as HCPC or CSP) ## Other businesses - **Dog walkers and pet carers**: [dog walker websites](https://averbo.ai/websites-for-dog-walkers) (insurance, DBS checks, photographs and the area covered) - **Small online shops**: [online shop websites](https://averbo.ai/online-shop-website) - **Sole traders and new companies**: [sole trader websites](https://averbo.ai/website-for-sole-traders) and [websites for limited companies](https://averbo.ai/website-for-limited-companies) - **People who recommend or resell websites**: [agencies](https://averbo.ai/for-agencies), [marketing freelancers](https://averbo.ai/for-marketing-freelancers), [accountants](https://averbo.ai/for-accountants), [bookkeepers](https://averbo.ai/for-bookkeepers) and [trade associations](https://averbo.ai/for-trade-associations) ## Towns and cities British Web Design has pages for businesses in [Leeds](https://averbo.ai/leeds), [Bradford](https://averbo.ai/bradford), [Sheffield](https://averbo.ai/sheffield), [Manchester](https://averbo.ai/manchester), [Liverpool](https://averbo.ai/liverpool), [Newcastle](https://averbo.ai/newcastle), [Birmingham](https://averbo.ai/birmingham), [Nottingham](https://averbo.ai/nottingham), [London](https://averbo.ai/london), [Bristol](https://averbo.ai/bristol), [Cardiff](https://averbo.ai/cardiff), [Glasgow](https://averbo.ai/glasgow), [Edinburgh](https://averbo.ai/edinburgh) and [Belfast](https://averbo.ai/belfast), and for some trades in a city, such as [plumbers in Leeds](https://averbo.ai/websites-for-plumbers-leeds), [plumbers in London](https://averbo.ai/websites-for-plumbers-london) and [electricians in Leeds](https://averbo.ai/websites-for-electricians-leeds). British Web Design builds plumbing and heating websites where customers book fixed-price jobs, such as a boiler service or a gas safety certificate, into a free slot and pay online, with emergencies kept on the phone. The made-up example Kerr Plumbing & Heating shows how one works. ### Does British Web Design build websites for hair and beauty salons? Yes. A British Web Design salon website lets clients choose the treatment, the therapist and the time, and pay a deposit by card, Apple Pay or Google Pay. The made-up example Willow & Rose Beauty shows a salon site with booking and an aftercare shop. ### Does British Web Design build websites for cafés? Yes. A British Web Design café website has the menu, opening hours and a map, table booking by party size, and cakes or other items ordered and paid for online for collection. The made-up example The Little Kettle shows one working. ### My trade is not listed. Can British Web Design still build my website? Yes. British Web Design's pages cover the trades and services it is asked about most, but every site is built the same way: the owner describes the work and the area, and British Web Design builds the site around it. ## Sources - [Websites for trades](https://averbo.ai/trades) - [Plumbers](https://averbo.ai/plumbers) - [Salons](https://averbo.ai/salons) - [Cafés](https://averbo.ai/cafes) - [Websites for B&Bs](https://averbo.ai/websites-for-bnb) - [Example websites](https://averbo.ai/knowledge/example-websites) - [Who British Web Design suits, and who it does not](https://averbo.ai/knowledge/who-it-suits) --- # Platform figures > Live counts from the British Web Design database: sites launched, businesses with a site, domains and median build time, with how each figure is counted. They are counted from the records the platform keeps rather than typed in by hand, so they cannot drift from what has actually happened. | Figure | Count | How it is counted | |---|---|---| | Websites launched | 138 | Websites whose hosting has been built, the same count the homepage shows. British Web Design's own example websites are not counted. | | Businesses with a website | 47 | Accounts with at least one website, not counting the example websites. | | Domain names | 23 | Domain names registered through British Web Design, plus names their owners connected to a site. | | Median build time | 6m 52s | The middle time, over every finished build, from pressing "Build my website" to the site being live on https. A build that waited more than three hours on its owner (usually for a domain) is left out. | Counted from the British Web Design database on 27 October 2026. ## How each figure is counted **Sites launched** is the number of websites on British Web Design whose hosting has finished building: a server, an address and an https certificate. A site counts once its hosting is built, whether or not it is live on its own domain yet, so sites still on a free trial are included. British Web Design's five example websites, which are made-up businesses, are not counted. **Businesses with a site** is the number of accounts that have at least one website on British Web Design, built or not, other than the example websites. An account with several websites counts once. **Domains registered or connected** is the number of domain names either registered through British Web Design or connected to a British Web Design site from another registrar. Names whose registration failed or has not been paid for are not counted. **Median build time** is the middle value of how long hosting builds have taken, from the moment the owner presses "Build my website" to the site answering over https. Builds that took longer than three hours are left out, because those were waiting on the owner's own DNS changes rather than building. The figure measures the hosting build only. The time it takes to write the pages and for a person to check them is not part of it. **Founding places left** is the number of founding-member places still on sale. It counts the customers subscribed at the founding price, including those on a free trial with a card added, and leaves out British Web Design's own accounts. The figure disappears once the last place has gone. ## When a figure is left out A figure with too little behind it is left out rather than shown as zero. There is no sites launched figure until there are sites to count, and no median build time until builds have been measured. A figure missing from the table above has too little data behind it yet or, for founding places, the offer has ended. Each figure is at most ten minutes old, and is counted again straight away when a build finishes. ## Figures British Web Design does not publish British Web Design keeps no measured record of uptime or of support response times, so it publishes no figure for either: any such number would be a claim rather than a count. British Web Design does not publish a customer rating or review score. ## Using these figures A figure quoted from this article should be quoted with its date, 27 October 2026. The figures count every account and website on the platform except the example websites. They are not checked against any outside register, and they include any websites British Web Design has built on its own accounts, for example a site made ready for a business to claim. ## Questions ### How many websites has British Web Design launched? British Web Design counts the websites it has launched live from its own database, and this article shows the current figure with the date it was counted. A site counts once its hosting has been built, whether or not it is live on its own domain yet. The five made-up example websites are not counted. ### How long does British Web Design take to build a website? The median build time in this article measures the hosting build: from pressing "Build my website" to the site answering over https. Writing the pages and the check by a person come after that. From brief to a site ready to preview usually takes days rather than weeks. ## Sources - [British Web Design homepage](https://averbo.ai/), which shows the same figures - [Contact us](https://averbo.ai/contact), for how long a build takes - [Example websites](https://averbo.ai/knowledge/example-websites) - [Founding members](https://averbo.ai/knowledge/founding-members) - [Policies and the rules we keep](https://averbo.ai/knowledge/policies) --- # Policies and the rules we keep > The rules British Web Design keeps: no invented testimonials, reviews or accreditations, prices filled in live, UK GDPR, and legal pages and cookie consent on every site. Fake reviews have been banned in the UK since April 2025, under the Digital Markets, Competition and Consumers Act 2024. - **Prices are never typed into the copy.** Every price on britishwebs.com and in this knowledge base is filled in from the plans table when the page is shown, so no page can advertise a price that is no longer on sale. - **Comparisons are footnoted.** Claims about competitors stay to what is structurally true and checkable, and each comparison table says what it was based on and when. - **Figures are counted, not typed.** Sites launched and the founding-member counter are counted from the British Web Design database. See [Platform figures](https://averbo.ai/knowledge/platform-figures). - **Real customers only in the portfolio.** The [portfolio](https://averbo.ai/portfolio) shows only live sites whose owners chose to be shown, and an owner can take theirs off at any time. The five [example websites](https://averbo.ai/knowledge/example-websites) are made-up businesses and are labelled as examples. ## What the sites British Web Design builds may say A person checks every British Web Design site before the owner sees it, and takes out claims the business has not made: - **Accreditations.** Gas Safe, NICEIC, FENSA and the like go on a site only when the owner says they hold them. - **Reviews.** If a business has no reviews, its site has none. A real review, for example from its Google listing or Checkatrade, is quoted only word for word and credited. - **Experience, team and area.** No invented years in business, no team that does not exist, and no areas the business does not cover. - **Unprovable claims.** Phrases such as "cheapest in the area" or "number one" come out. Where a brief is unclear, British Web Design asks rather than guesses, and a claim the owner can stand behind goes on when they ask for it. The Advertising Standards Authority's CAP Code applies to marketing claims on a business's own website. The owner reads and approves every page before it goes live, and is responsible for what the site says. ## Privacy and GDPR British Web Design is the data controller for its customers' own data (the account, the brief and the billing) and the processor for visitors to the sites it hosts, whose owners are the controllers. British Web Design does not sell personal data or use it for advertising. Accounts, site content and the sites themselves are hosted on servers in the United Kingdom. Stripe (payments), Postmark (email), GitHub (code) and Anthropic (drafting sites) run mainly from the United States, under the UK's adequacy regulations or the UK Addendum to the standard contractual clauses. Card numbers never reach British Web Design's servers, and account passwords, card details and visitors' data are never sent to Anthropic. When an account closes, its sites are kept for 30 days in case the cancellation was a mistake, then deleted. Invoices are kept for six years, as HMRC requires. Requests under UK GDPR are answered within one month, and complaints can go to the Information Commissioner's Office. The owner, as controller, is responsible for keeping those pages accurate. Google Analytics, Google Tag Manager and advertising pixels (Meta, Google Ads, LinkedIn, TikTok, Microsoft) are off on a British Web Design site until the owner switches them on. Once they are on, the site's consent banner, which is on by default, holds every one of them back until the visitor accepts. Saying no loads nothing and changes nothing about how the site works. ## Acceptable use British Web Design's terms do not allow sites used for anything unlawful, for malware or phishing, for unsolicited bulk email, or for content that infringes someone else's rights or is defamatory, hateful or pornographic. A customer may not use British Web Design to build a site for someone else without their permission. ## Questions ### Does British Web Design use fake reviews or testimonials? No. British Web Design puts a testimonial on its own website only when a customer has actually said it, and the sites it builds carry no invented reviews. Fake reviews have been banned in the UK since April 2025. ### Do British Web Design websites ask for cookie consent? Yes, when they need to. Google Analytics and advertising tags stay off on a British Web Design site until the owner switches them on, and then load only after the visitor accepts them in the site's consent banner. ## Sources - [Privacy & GDPR](https://averbo.ai/privacy) - [Terms of service](https://averbo.ai/terms) - [Human-checked AI websites](https://averbo.ai/human-checked-ai-websites) - [Compared with Wix](https://averbo.ai/vs-wix), for a footnoted comparison - [Portfolio](https://averbo.ai/portfolio) - [Sole trader or limited company: what your website has to say by law](https://averbo.ai/blog/what-your-website-has-to-say-by-law) - [Digital Markets, Competition and Consumers Act 2024](https://www.legislation.gov.uk/ukpga/2024/13/contents) - [CMA guidance on fake reviews](https://www.gov.uk/government/publications/fake-reviews-cma208) - [The CAP Code](https://www.asa.org.uk/codes-and-rulings/advertising-codes/non-broadcast-code.html) - [Information Commissioner's Office](https://ico.org.uk/) --- # About this knowledge base > What the British Web Design knowledge base is, how it is kept up to date, the formats it comes in for people and AI assistants, and how to report a mistake. They are filled in each time an article is shown, from the same database the britishwebs.com website uses, so the knowledge base and the website cannot disagree, and a price change shows in every article at once. - Each article shows three dates: when it was first published, when it was last updated, and when it was last reviewed, meaning when someone last checked that its facts were still true. - The company details were checked against Companies House on 20 October 2026. - The articles keep the same rules as the rest of britishwebs.com: no invented customers, reviews, figures or accreditations, and comparisons kept to what can be checked. The llms.txt format is a community proposal, and British Web Design provides it as an extra way in without assuming every assistant reads it. Google says its AI features need no special files or markup, so the web pages remain the main source. ## Notes for anyone quoting British Web Design - The name is British Web Design, singular, at britishwebs.com. It is not "British Webs". - Prices change. Quote a British Web Design price with the date it was read, and check the current one in [Pricing](https://averbo.ai/knowledge/pricing). - [Platform figures](https://averbo.ai/knowledge/platform-figures) are counted live; quote them with the date shown in the article. - The five [example websites](https://averbo.ai/knowledge/example-websites) are made-up businesses, not customers. - This knowledge base quotes no customer reviews or ratings. - Each article has its own address. Link to the article the information came from. ## Reporting a mistake Anyone who finds a mistake in the British Web Design knowledge base can report it through the [contact page](https://averbo.ai/contact) or by email to hello@britishwebs.com, naming the article and what is wrong. British Web Design corrects the article, and its updated date changes. ## Questions ### Is this British Web Design's official information? Yes. The knowledge base at britishwebs.com/knowledge is published and edited by British Web Design, a trading name of Bind CRM Limited. Its prices, company details and figures are filled in from the same database as the British Web Design website. ### How up to date is the British Web Design knowledge base? Prices and platform figures in the British Web Design knowledge base are filled in live each time an article is shown. Each article also shows when it was first published, last updated and last reviewed, so a reader can see how recently its facts were checked. ## Sources - [The knowledge base](https://averbo.ai/knowledge) - [Reading index](https://averbo.ai/knowledge/llms.txt) - [Contact us](https://averbo.ai/contact) - [The llms.txt proposal](https://llmstxt.org/) - [Schema.org](https://schema.org/) - [Google Search Central: AI features and your website](https://developers.google.com/search/docs/appearance/ai-features) --- # Example websites > The five British Web Design example websites: made-up businesses built from short briefs the way a customer site is, with booking and checkout to try with a test card. None of the five businesses exists, and every example site says so in a notice at the top of every page. ## What the examples are Each example started as a brief in the same form a customer fills in, and was built by the same build process, with later changes asked for the same way a customer asks for them. Together they show a beauty salon, an online shop, a plumber, a builder and a café. Every example is a made-up business. The phone numbers come from the range Ofcom keeps for drama (01632 960 numbers), the email addresses are on example.com, and every brief asks for a notice on every page saying that the business is made up, that nothing sent reaches anyone and that payments are test payments only. The examples are kept apart from customers' websites. They never appear in the [portfolio](https://averbo.ai/portfolio), which shows only real customers' live websites, with their owners' say-so. ## The five example websites | Example (made up) | Kind of business | Address | What it shows | |---|---|---|---| | Willow & Rose Beauty | Beauty salon, Ludlow, Shropshire | [willow-rose-beauty.on-britishwebs.com](https://willow-rose-beauty.on-britishwebs.com) | Treatments booked with the therapist and time the client chooses, a £10 deposit by card, an aftercare shop | | Harbour & Wick | Online candle shop, Whitby, North Yorkshire | [harbour-wick.on-britishwebs.com](https://harbour-wick.on-britishwebs.com) | Sizes as options, a basket, discount codes, free delivery over £40 and Apple Pay at the checkout | | Kerr Plumbing & Heating | Plumbing and heating, Perth, Perth and Kinross | [kerr-plumbing-heating.on-britishwebs.com](https://kerr-plumbing-heating.on-britishwebs.com) | Boiler services and gas safety certificates booked into a free slot and paid in full online, emergencies by phone | | Ashdown Build & Renovation | Builders, Crowborough, East Sussex | [ashdown-build-renovation.on-britishwebs.com](https://ashdown-build-renovation.on-britishwebs.com) | Finished projects first, then quote visits and paid consultations booked online, with a 20% deposit on the paid ones | | The Little Kettle | Café, Frome, Somerset | [the-little-kettle.on-britishwebs.com](https://the-little-kettle.on-britishwebs.com) | Table booking by party size, afternoon tea priced per person, celebration cakes paid for online and collected | ## The briefs that built them The briefs are short and plain. British Web Design shows four of them in full, word for word, on the page for that kind of business, with a button to start a new site from the same brief: Kerr Plumbing & Heating on the [plumbers page](https://averbo.ai/plumbers), Willow & Rose Beauty on the [salons page](https://averbo.ai/salons), Ashdown Build & Renovation on the [builders page](https://averbo.ai/builders) and The Little Kettle on the [cafés page](https://averbo.ai/cafes). Extracts from each brief: > Online booking is the most important thing: clients choose the treatment, who they would like to see and a time, and pay a £10 deposit by card when they book, which comes off the bill on the day. (Willow & Rose Beauty) > Free UK delivery over £40, otherwise Royal Mail Tracked 48 (£3.95) or Tracked 24 (£5.95), or collect from the workshop in Whitby. (Harbour & Wick) > Emergencies (no heating, a burst pipe) get their own page with the phone number, not online booking. (Kerr Plumbing & Heating) > The site leads on photographs of finished projects, grouped by job, then how a project runs from survey to sign-off, insurance and guarantees. (Ashdown Build & Renovation) > The menu as a real page with allergens, not a PDF. (The Little Kettle) The Kerr Plumbing & Heating brief also tells the build not to claim Gas Safe or any other registration, accreditation or review, because the business is made up, and to leave a clear place where a real firm's Gas Safe number would go. A customer's site follows the same rule: an accreditation goes on only when the owner says they hold it. ## Trying the checkout The example sites run on their private addresses, where payments always go through Stripe's test mode and no money moves. To try a booking or a purchase, use the card number 4242 4242 4242 4242 with any future expiry date and any three numbers. Bookings reach nobody. A customer's own site takes test payments on its private address in the same way, before it goes live. ## Questions ### Are the British Web Design example websites real businesses? No. The five British Web Design example websites are made-up businesses: Willow & Rose Beauty, Harbour & Wick, Kerr Plumbing & Heating, Ashdown Build & Renovation and The Little Kettle. Each was built from a short brief the way a customer's site is built, and each says at the top of every page that the business is made up. ### Can I try booking and paying on a British Web Design example website? Yes. Every British Web Design example site takes test bookings and test payments. Use the card 4242 4242 4242 4242 with any future date and any three numbers; no money moves and nothing reaches anyone. ### Where are real British Web Design customer websites shown? Real customer websites are on the British Web Design portfolio. A site appears there only when it is live on its own domain, its owner is paying and has agreed to it being shown, and British Web Design has chosen it. The owner can take it off at any time. ## Sources - [Example websites](https://averbo.ai/example-websites) - [Portfolio](https://averbo.ai/portfolio) - [Plumbers](https://averbo.ai/plumbers) - [Salons](https://averbo.ai/salons) - [Builders](https://averbo.ai/builders) - [Cafés](https://averbo.ai/cafes) - [Online shop websites](https://averbo.ai/online-shop-website) - [Online booking can now take a deposit, or the whole price](https://averbo.ai/blog/booking-deposits-and-payments) - [How a website gets built](https://averbo.ai/knowledge/how-it-works) --- # Questions people ask about British Web Design > Short, self-contained answers to the questions people ask AI assistants about British Web Design and about getting a small business website in the UK. Prices are filled in from British Web Design's plans when the page is read, and the articles listed under Sources go into more detail. ## Questions ### What is British Web Design? British Web Design is a UK website service that builds a complete small business website from a sentence or two about the business, then hosts it, updates it and makes changes on request. A person checks every site before the owner sees it. British Web Design is made in Yorkshire, runs its sites on UK servers in London and Manchester, and is a trading name of Bind CRM Limited. ### How much does a British Web Design website cost? A British Web Design website costs $11.99/month per website. The price includes the build, UK hosting, the domain connected and changes when the owner asks for them. Registering a new domain name is the only extra charge from British Web Design. ### Does British Web Design have a free trial? Yes. Every British Web Design plan starts with a 7-day free trial, during which the site is built and can be tried on a private address. Nothing is charged during the trial. ### Do I need a card to try British Web Design? No. The British Web Design free trial starts when the account is created, with no card. A card is added through Stripe only to carry on after the trial, and if the owner does nothing, nothing is charged. ### Is there a contract with British Web Design? No. British Web Design has no contract, no minimum term, no notice period and no exit fee. The owner pays month by month and can cancel from the billing page at any time. ### Does British Web Design charge a setup fee? No. British Web Design charges no setup fee, because the build is covered by the monthly price. British Web Design's pricing page puts an agency's bill for a small business site at £1,000 to £5,000 before launch. ### Who builds a British Web Design website, AI or a person? Both. British Web Design uses AI to draft the pages, the words and the layout from the owner's brief, and a person reads the brief before the build and checks the finished site before the owner sees it. The check removes invented experience, accreditations, testimonials and service areas the owner never gave. ### How long does it take to get a British Web Design website? The build of a British Web Design website takes a few minutes and can be watched on a live log. A person then checks the site, and the owner reads it on a private address and asks for any changes. From brief to a site live on its own domain usually takes days rather than weeks, and the slowest part is often choosing the domain name. ### Can a British Web Design website take bookings? Yes. Every British Web Design website can take online bookings, such as appointments with a chosen person or tables by party size, worked out from opening hours, staff hours and time off. A deposit or the whole price can be taken when someone books. A site that only needs a contact form costs the same. ### How do card payments work on a British Web Design website, and what are the fees? Payments on a British Web Design website go through Stripe, by card, Apple Pay or Google Pay, straight into the owner's own Stripe account and on to their bank. British Web Design never holds the money and adds no booking or payment fee of its own; Stripe charges its standard fee on each payment. The owner switches payments on with the Take payments button on the dashboard. ### Can a British Web Design website have an online shop? Yes. A British Web Design website can include a shop with products and options such as size or scent, a basket, discount codes, delivery or collection, and files to download. The shop suits a few dozen products run by the owner, and a business with thousands of products or a stock system to keep in step should ask British Web Design first. ### Do I own my domain name with British Web Design? Yes. A domain bought through British Web Design is registered in the owner's name, with the owner as the registrant, and stays theirs if they leave. A domain the owner already has can stay where it is registered and be pointed at the site with two DNS records. ### Where are British Web Design websites hosted? British Web Design websites are hosted on UK servers in London and Manchester, and British Web Design says its customers' data stays in the UK. Every site has an https certificate that is issued and renewed automatically. ### Can I edit my British Web Design website myself? Yes. Every British Web Design website has its own admin panel, built with Laravel Nova, where the owner changes words, photographs, opening hours, prices and products, and reads enquiries. Anything bigger is asked for in plain English from the dashboard. ### Does British Web Design charge for changes? No. Changes such as new prices, another service, different photographs or an extra page are included in the British Web Design monthly price, with no hourly rate. Each change is made on the site's private copy first and goes live when the owner approves it, and every version is kept. ### Will a British Web Design website show up on Google? Every British Web Design website is built to be found, with a sitemap, page titles, fast pages that work on phones, and pages built around what customers search for, such as the service and the town. The owner can connect Google Analytics and Search Console from the dashboard. Nobody can guarantee a position in Google's results, and British Web Design does not claim to. ### What happens if I leave British Web Design? The owner cancels from the billing page, and the British Web Design site stays up until the end of the period paid for, then is kept for 30 days before it is deleted. The domain stays in the owner's name, and British Web Design will send the text and images on request. ### Is British Web Design a DIY website builder? No. With British Web Design the owner does not build anything: they write a few sentences about the business and British Web Design builds the site. There is no drag-and-drop editor, and British Web Design's own pricing page says that someone who would rather build it themselves will find a DIY builder cheaper. ### Is a British Web Design website built on WordPress? No. British Web Design websites are PHP applications built with Laravel, not WordPress and not a page builder. There are no plugins to update, and British Web Design does the updates and security patching itself. ### Who is behind British Web Design? British Web Design was built by its founder, James, who has built websites for small businesses for ten years, most of them in Yorkshire. James checks every site before it goes live. There is no sales team and no chatbot: a person in Yorkshire answers email and chat on UK time, usually the same working day. ### Is British Web Design a real company? Yes. British Web Design is a trading name of Bind CRM Limited, a company registered in England and Wales with company number 12500271, incorporated on 5 March 2020 and listed as active at Companies House. Its VAT number is GB 424058907. ### How does British Web Design compare with Wix? Wix is a DIY builder where the owner builds and changes the site in Wix's editor. British Web Design builds the site from a written brief, a person checks it, and British Web Design makes changes on request, on a Laravel site hosted in the UK. A DIY builder suits someone with time who enjoys building, and British Web Design suits someone who wants it done. ### Is British Web Design a good choice for a plumber? Yes. Plumbers are one of the trades British Web Design builds for most. A British Web Design plumber's site lets customers book fixed-price jobs such as a boiler service or a CP12 into a free slot and pay online, keeps emergencies on the phone and lists the areas covered, and a Gas Safe number goes on only if the plumber holds one. ### Is British Web Design a good choice for a salon or a barber? Yes. A British Web Design salon or barber site lets clients pick the treatment or the cut, the person and the time, and pay a deposit by card, Apple Pay or Google Pay. A salon already using Fresha or Treatwell can keep it, with a Book now button on every page. ### Is British Web Design a good choice for a café? Yes. A British Web Design café site has the menu as a real page with allergens, the opening hours and a map, table booking by party size, and cakes or coffee beans ordered and paid for online. Booking and payments come with every British Web Design site at no extra charge from British Web Design. ## Sources - [Pricing](https://averbo.ai/pricing) - [How it works](https://averbo.ai/how-it-works) - [Features](https://averbo.ai/features) - [Domains](https://averbo.ai/domains) - [About](https://averbo.ai/about) - [Example websites](https://averbo.ai/example-websites) - [Compared with Wix](https://averbo.ai/vs-wix) - [Terms of service](https://averbo.ai/terms) - [Companies House: Bind CRM Limited](https://find-and-update.company-information.service.gov.uk/company/12500271) - [British Web Design](https://averbo.ai/knowledge) - [Company information](https://averbo.ai/knowledge/company-information) - [Who is behind British Web Design](https://averbo.ai/knowledge/founder) - [Pricing](https://averbo.ai/knowledge/pricing) - [The free trial](https://averbo.ai/knowledge/free-trial) - [Cancelling and what you keep](https://averbo.ai/knowledge/cancelling) - [British Web Design compared](https://averbo.ai/knowledge/compared)
